Every time I reminisce on Belize I can’t help but think of this picture. Las Terrazas, Belize where my son and I sit on a swing… in the ocean! I get goose bumps just thinking about the wonderful experience we shared. The purpose of this mother-son trip was to spend some time alone with my son, Michael. He’s the youngest of 3 and my only boy, so I felt some quality time would bring us closer and boy was I right.
From the very moment we landed in Central America Michael was excited to explore Belize! To get to our destination we took a taxi ride to a speed boat then an hour later another taxi ride to our resort. We managed to have a proper dinner before we called it a night where we got to chat about our adventure. Through all of this my baby boy was a trooper and the absolute best travel buddy!
As mothers we want to hold onto to our babies for as long as we can and it’s because of moments like these. Moments that take your breath away and the reason you breathe all wrapped in one. I’ll always have the memories and I encourage you to do the same. I know traveling with children can be a lot at times, but it’s all encompassing when you focus on the journey and not the destination. My journey to Mele led me to a swing in the ocean in Belize with my only son, and I couldn’t be happier. Check out more of my favorite moments from my mother-son trip to Belize.
We had an amazing experience touring the Lamanai Ruins in Belize. The ruins are in great condition and the grounds of the site are well maintained. There are a set of stairs adjacent to the High Temple, which allowed us to gain access to the top of the temple (one of the few Mayan ruins where you can still do this). The views from this point were incredible. Michael had a kick spotting multiple troops of howler monkeys and spider monkeys swinging around in the trees. The ruins are literally in the middle of the Belizean jungle so we were shaded by trees for the whole experience, which was nice in the heat.
A mother-son trip enhanced with us floating down Belize’s longest and most spectacular “River of Caves”, cave tubing float over 7 miles underground. We entered the exciting world of rivers disappearing into the underworld as we floated on inner tubes with only our headlamp to light our way. Float past underground waterfalls then into the crystal cathedral, a spiritual center to the ancient Maya.
After a magical snorkeling experience, we stopped at the island of Half Moon Caye for delicious lunch, some island time and a quaint visit to the Red-Footed Booby Bird Sanctuary – a special encounter with these rare species.
Besides escaping the cold, the major reason why I chose Belize was for us to snorkel at Great Blue Hole of Belize, one of the world’s most recognizable natural wonders. The Great Blue Hole is a massive underwater sinkhole formed during various ice ages. The Discovery Channel listed it as one of the 10 most amazing places on earth.
We began our tour on a sunrise cruise to Lighthouse Reef as we enjoyed breakfast. After 2.5 hours we arrived and did what we came to do. However, I chickened out from swimming with the Reef Sharks but my fearless baby boy was able to attain this amazing bragging right.
We squeezed parasailing on our last day of this epic mother-son vacation.
